First Sunday in Advent
Sunday, December 1st at 9:30 a.m. Advent is all about anticipation of the 'coming days'. Jesus’ contemporaries hoped for the time “to stand before the Son of Man.” As they did, we eagerly await the coming days: another Christmas celebration, a second coming, and the advent of Christ in word and supper. Advent Giving: Today we are collecting chunky soups, ramen noodles, and macaroni & cheese for the Center for Youth. Confirmation Class Meeting Sunday, December 1st at 10:45 a.m. in the Conference Room Second Sunday in Advent Sunday, December 8th at 9:30 a.m. God announces a covenant with Israel. A messenger like Malachi (his name means 'my messenger') will purify and refine God's people in preparation. "Prepare the way of the Lord. All flesh shall see the salvation of God." (Luke 3:4,6) Advent Giving: Today we are collecting brunch items like corned beef hash, coffee, and special jams (no grape, please!) for the Pittsford Food Cupboard. Annual Congregational Budget Meeting Join us following worship in Reissig Hall for snacks, beverages, and this important yearly meeting. Advent Lessons, Carols, and Organ Responses Sunday, December 8th at 3:00 p.m. Sponsored by the Rochester Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Please join us for familiar Advent carols and readings paired with selected organ works performed by several area organists and Eastman students. This event is free and open to the public. Third Sunday in Advent Sunday, December 15th at 9:30 a.m. Christ’s presence in our midst is cause for singing. The nearness of the God in prayer, in every circumstance, is cause for rejoicing. Great joy is the tone for the third Sunday of Advent. Advent Giving: Today we are collecting men's and women's new underwear in all sizes for the Asbury Warehouse. Adult Forum: We will be making Christmas cards for shut-ins and former members. Fourth Sunday in Advent Sunday, December 22nd at 9:30 a.m. Cradle and cross are inextricably connected on this fourth Sunday of Advent. Between a lovely tribute to the little town of Bethlehem and Mary’s magnificent song of praise, the letter to the Hebrews reminds us in no uncertain terms that Christ’s advent is for “the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” Advent Giving: Today we are collecting diapers (especially larger sizes) for Catholic Family Charities Refugee Resettlement. Christmas Pageant During our 9:30 a.m. Worship Christmas Eve Candlelight Service Tuesday, December 24th at 4:00 p.m. In winter’s deepest night, we welcome the light of the Christ child. Isaiah declares that the light of the long-promised king will illumine the world and bring endless peace and justice. Paul reminds us that the grace of God through Jesus Christ brings salvation to all people. The angels declare that Jesus’ birth is good and joyful news for everyone, including lowly shepherds. Filled with the light that shines in our lives, we go forth to share the light of Christ with the whole world. Christmas Day Service of Celebration Wednesday, December 25th at 9:30 a.m. Today we celebrate the incarnate Word, God becoming flesh to live among us in the person of Jesus Christ then and now. Emboldened by the good news of Christ’s birth, along with the shepherds, Mary and Joseph, and all witnesses to the light of Christ, we declare to the world that we have indeed seen and been transformed by the arrival of “the salvation of our God.” O come, let us adore! |
